This performance was a collaboration with Ines Ballesteros. We became friends through the "Vrijdagmarkt" in Antwerp. It's an auction flee market taking place every Friday in the center of the city. After a certain hour, a lot of the goods proposed for sale are left abandoned and a garbage truck comes to collect them.
This place is a gathering point where artists and students collect a lot of free material that sometimes ends up cluttering our studios and living spaces.
We came up with the idea of this performance when Ines had to leave Antwerp and get rid of some of her belongings. We decided to declutter our spaces through a performative action.
5,4,3,2,1 Nobody is an upside down auction. Everything is free. You just have to be the first one to raise your hand and in case of conflict, to find a way to solve it.
We were counting down from 5 unil "Nobody". If nobody had raised his or her hand, the item was mercylessly destroyed by the "smaching machine" that I designed and built for this event.
Eventually, the performance went well and almost every object has been saved from destruction.
